Douro
Retreat
1. IDEA
Located in the heart of the Douro wine region, this weekend retreat has a beautiful view on the Douro river, and its terraced vineyards and olive groves.
The original stone house is only 20 m2 and dates back to the 1800’s.
The rehabilitation will aim at creating a space that is in harmony with its surroundings, including the olive farm that surrounds the house.

2. PROCESS
Located in a climate that is cold and rainy in winter and hot and dry during the summer months, the biggest technical challenge will be to create an efficient, yet comfortable home, while maintaining the openness of the south-facing facade to capture views of the river. The existing stone structure, although small, will be carefully incorporated into a larger contemporary house.
3. SOLUTION
The existing granite structure will become the ‘heart’ of the new house which will take full advantage of the splendid views on the cascading olive and vine planted terraces, down to the Douro river.
The house will be reminiscent of the retaining walls of the terraces which are part of UNESCO world heritage and so typical in this area.
A clear distincion between the centuries old structure and the new will be respected to honor the history of the site.
