1. IDEA


NATURAL


Located on an idyllic lake setting, north of Montreal, in the province of Quebec, the vision for the chalet was for it to dissolve into the surrounding forest. The temperate deciduous forest inspired the cladding: vertical, irregular slats of Eastern Hemlock (Tsuga Canadensis L.). This wood darkens as it ages naturally. When viewed from the access road, the house would appear disguised as part of the forest.

2. PROCESS


HIGH PERFORMANCE


Located in a harsh winter climate, the biggest technical challenge was to create an efficient yet comfortable home, while maintaining the existing orientation and footprint. A highly insulated envelope was therefore critical, and high performance fenestration was limited, largely, to the East façade.


3. SOLUTION


INTEGRATED


The house is a sunrise house, opening up to the magnificent view of the lake as the sun is rising. The 120 m2 interior extends onto a wood deck suspended over the garden. The house frames the lake from every room taking in the constantly changing views, be it due to the light, time of day or season. This was to be a simple, unassuming house, one that could be partly built by the client. The simplicity of the design would also allow for a synergy with the surrounding nature and for its inherent beauty to stand out and be front and center, each making the other more beautiful.

1. IDEA


NATURAL


Located
on a 3.4 ha farm in Alentejo the original&#38;nbsp; farmhouse was surrounded by a
‘crown’ of stone pine trees (Pinus
Pinea L.).
 The concept for this house was to keep the small existing footprint and the original construction method of ‘taipa’, consisting of thick adobe-like walls that offer great thermal resistance for hot summer weather.

2. PROCESS


SIMPLE&#38;nbsp;


The
traditional ‘taipa’ construction methods consists of wet earth compacted into formwork, with
a plaster finish which allows the taipa walls to breathe. 

Limiting the footprint to the existing house was a challenge.
The small 60 m2 house would be made grand with its whitewash and light
colored finishes, added natural light, higher ceiling and by expanding into
the exterior with an outdoor kitchen, shower and 
living areas.


3. SOLUTION


EARTH MADE


The
living is easy in the Alentejo region and the climate is arid and
mild, with nearly 3000 hours of sunshine during an average year.
A wood deck provides an extension to the house, which creates a continuation of the
living and dining room to the outside. 
The
exterior spaces have been renaturalized with perennial, endemic and
adaptive species which do not require irrigation, a scarce resource
in the region, but still provide color and life throughout the year.

In
this quiet corner, often, the only thing that can be heard is the
sound of pine trees rustling in the wind.
Peaceful
and relaxing inside and out.

CHARMING&#38;nbsp; &#38;nbsp; &#38;nbsp;


Located
in an
1800’s building in the historic Bonjardim street in the center of
Porto, this project consisted of the conversion of a 120 m2 apartment
into 2 smaller apartments. The conversion process aimed at restoring the classic glamour of the original building and era, that had been since lost.

PRESERVATION&#38;nbsp; &#38;nbsp; &#38;nbsp; &#38;nbsp;

Central
yet quiet, this area of the city is full of old, understated charm.
This quality drove the intent of this rehabilitation: bringing back
the glamour of the original construction while adding modern day
comfort.
Skilled artisans were instrumental to realizing this vision, working delicately to resurface decades old materials.


3. SOLUTION


This is a sunrise, East facing, apartment. The quality and play of light varies throughout the day and that dictated the layouts and finishes, decoration.
Compact
yet comfortable and charming, the classic heritage was meticulously
restored
with
special attention to craftsmanship to allow for exposing original details.

1. IDEA


BRIGHT


Located
on a 1.8 ha property in Alentejo this small house is adjacent to a
pond and a meadow. Cork
oak&#38;nbsp;(Quercus
Suber L.)
and
pine trees make up the higher parts of the property to envelope it
and create privacy. Olive trees occupy the lower part of the property
and the meadow.The concept for this ‘taipa’
house
was to rehabilitate
it keeping
the existing footprint and to
connect it to exterior spaces and landscape.

RELAXED


The
70 m2 house was built of
the traditional ‘taipa’ construction method consisting of thick
adobe-like walls made of wet earth
compacted in formwork. With a white plaster finish, which
allows the walls to breathe, this small
house is made grand with its light colored finishes and by expanding
into the exterior with an outdoor kitchen, outdoor shower and outdoor
living areas, such as the patio, which is a continuation
of the living and dining rooms. The
focus of the rehabilitation was on improving thermal performance, by
insulating the roof, and on adding fenestration to create a brighter and warmer light environment.&#38;nbsp;


3. SOLUTION


TIMELESS


This
is a sunset house. In the afternoon the warmth of the light here is
breathtaking. And it seems to linger and linger, well after the sun
goes down, casting a layer of golden light on
the landscape.


Simple
decoration including
local
ceramics and other objects, helps
to keep
the focus on the exterior natural elements, such as the majestic cork
oak
and olive trees, as well as the meadow.


By
restoring the original quality and materiality we restored its
character and preserved its stories told through timeless echoes.

Located
in an
1800’s building in the historic Bonjardim street in the center of
Porto, this project consisted on the conversion of a 120 m2 apartment
into 2 smaller apartments. Recapturing the old charm of the building was the main driver of this rehabilitation.

Central
yet quiet, this area of the city is full of old, understated charm.
This quality inspired this rehabilitation: bringing back
the glamour of the original construction while adding modern day
comfort.


3. SOLUTION


VINTAGE&#38;nbsp;


This is a West facing, sunset apartment. The quality and play of light varies from throughout the day and its warmth dictated the layouts, finishes, and decoration. The warm of the light and original wod is balanced by the uncovered granite walls.

1. IDEA


RURAL&#38;nbsp; &#38;nbsp; &#38;nbsp; &#38;nbsp;


Located
1 hour from Porto, this weekend
retreat
is inserted in a working
lemon
farm. 


The
original stone house dated from the early 1900’s and the rehabilitation aimed at
creating a bright, warm and inviting space,
in a region that is often rainy, cold
and grey.


2. PROCESS


STONE &#38;nbsp;


The
aim was that the
house would look onto the lemon farm and be
in harmony
with the exterior areas, including pool, patio
and farm where horses roam freely.


To
balance the cold, existing granite
walls, warm south-facing light was
amplified by creating strategic openings in the existing stone. Warm
colored decoration and
finishes help to soften the
interior. 


The
existing stone water tank was made into a shallow pool which helps
organize the outdoor space.

WARMTH


This
small house is
surrounded by roaming animals and fruit
trees that need tending to. This
dynamic environment by day contrasts with the serenity of nights here
where all that can be heard is the sounds of the countryside. Near the
city but far from the city pace of life.

Located
in the historic center on
the illustrious
Rua da Alegria, this is the conversion of a 100 m2 apartment with an
inner patio.


Located
in the heart of the city yet facing the back of the building, the
apartment has a special sense of quiet and 1950’s modern air. 


2. PROCESS


BLEND&#38;nbsp; &#38;nbsp; &#38;nbsp;&#38;nbsp;


The
rehabilitation focused on restoring the 1950’s details, ambiance
and texture by resurfacing stone walls and refinishing surfaces. The
granite interplays with soft and warm finishes and lighting to create
a delightful and comfortable space that combines both historic and modern world charm.
A challenge for this project was to optimize the light in a North facing apartment. Raising the ceiling height, removing walls and playing with reflectivity all helped to achieve this.

3. SOLUTION


This
somewhat dark apartment was made brighter with a colorful decoration
and use of a balanced and warm lighting design.


The
result is an apartment that evokes the warmth of its era.

1. IDEA


URBAN WILDERNESS
Located in the historic district in Porto, this outdoor space had been previously used as a dump for construction waste, resuting in the higher ground level. The intent was to turn it into a small urban oasis with endemic vegetation adapted to the mild yet very wet Porto climate.

RESTORE


This
project
consists of
the rehabilitation
of a 100 m2 outdoor space.


The
space is located
in the back
of an 1800’s building and it has good solar exposure and some wind
protection. The Porto climate provides an average of 1250 mm of precipitation per
year.


The
rehabilitation focused on creating
a warm and inviting space that is an all-season garden.


3. SOLUTION


TEXTURE


The
play of textures and colors were studied for the backdrop of the
existing stone walls and the species selection was made to ensure
plants&#38;nbsp; were either endemic or adapted to the local climate, so
as not to need irrigation or excessive maintenance. 


The
granite interplays with soft and warm foliage
and lighting to create a cohesive
and harmonious
design.


Using
a succession garden design approach we were able to create an environment that is
lush and has color, flowers and greenery all year round.


The
result is an
urban oasis that
evokes tranquility
and warmth.

Located
1 hour from Porto, this weekend
retreat
has
a beautiful view on the Tamega river.The
original stone house dates from 1800’s and the rehabilitation will aim at creating a space that is in harmony
with the exterior areas, including pool, garden and the river.

WARM


To
balance the cold, existing granite
walls, bigger openings and warm south-facing light will help to warm up the
interior. The
existing stone walls will be rehabilitated to frame a cozy garden that complements the house.


3. SOLUTION


QUIET


The house is a sunset house, opening up to the magnificent view of the river in the afternoon sun. The 90 m2 interior extends onto a garden on both sides of the house. Each has a different quality and is programmed for difefrent activities, the East garden with the pool and more private, the West garden more open and warmer st sunset.

Located
on a 2.5
ha farm in Alentejo this house is adjacent to an old, magestic cork tree.The structure dates
back to the 1950’s, and consists of 4 separate structures with small openings. The intent is connect the spaces into one fluid home that ‘branches’ out to the exterior from all rooms to embrace the different views and moments in each distinct area while also creating private outdoor areas.

EARTH-MADE


The central part of the house was
constructed using the traditional ‘taipa’ construction method
consisting of adobe-like walls made of wet earth compacted into
formwork, with
a plaster finish which allows the taipa walls to breathe. WIth an existing shell and roof, this
180
m2 house will be made brighter and more open by adding and enlarging openings for natural light, which will allow the interior to connect to the exterior and its various outdoor living areas. Outdoor
spaces are a natural extension of houses in this region.The
exterior areas are
being
renaturalized with perennial, endemic and adapted
species.


3. SOLUTION


WHITE


In order to create privacy for a large house able to sleep 10, the proposal will be to open the house in multiple directions so each space can have a ‘pressure relief valve’.The
living is easy in the Alentejo region and the climate is arid and
mild, with nearly 3000 hours of sunshine during an average year. In
this quiet corner, often the only thing that can be heard is the
